“Every day is a challenge, so I learn something new every day.”
A treasure trove for the senses, John Gamba loved exploring his grandmother’s garden while he was growing up. “I remember taking the basil and my grandmother showed me how to grow it and smudge it with your hands so you could smell it on your fingertips.”
Now, as a perfumer, John’s main inspiration comes from cooking and gardening, and he enjoys working with spices. “In perfumes, it really enhances the herbal aspect,” he says. “But it has to be just the right amount.”
With a background in chemistry, John’s knack for precision has served him well. He’s earned a reputation for being a problem solver by being able to translate a fragrance from one medium to another, such as turning a perfume into a shower gel or body lotion. “It's always fun to tackle a different obstacle in perfumery,” he says.
