The hellebore flower is steeped in olden myth and mysticism, particularly due to its poisonous nature. However, one popular story spins a more positive account of a little girl named Madelon, who wanted to worship the Christ Child at Christmas. She saw others offering gold, frankincense and myrrh but was too poor to offer such extravagant gifts. In despair, Madelon is said to have wept in the snowy countryside, in search of a flower to give as a gift instead. Luckily enough, an angel passing over stopped to comfort the girl by growing a bush of white roses from her tears.
